1. A mumber of Governors have raised the problem they have encountered in obtaining adequate funds through their Legislative Assembly for the upkeep mad maintenance of Government House, We are, therefore, looking at the problem to see whether there is any way in which we een help.

2. Colonial Regulation 281 in Part II of Colonial Regulati provides that the Government House, together with its stables garages, sutbuildings, fenses and other appartenances, shall be kept in mabutantial repair throughout at the cost of the Territory. The rooms shall be painted and papered (when necessery) and færished at the public expense. Plate and table orinnerts to a moderate and ressona51e amount, toga with crockery, glass, outlery and toler utensils, shall also be xrovided at the cost of the Territory,

3. The policy set out in Colonial Regulation 281 has been adhered to esnsistently. The only know exceptions have been where sid funds have been provided to bring Government Houses to a reasonable standard prior to a royal visit (e.g. BVI and Seyshellas) or, in the came of Anguilla, where a new house vema bazilt and equipped with aid funds for HM Commission285° whon Anguilla zwværted to Dependent Territory type statu

4. I do not need to tell you that the Governor of a Dependent Territory is in a unique position of authority and respaisib- ility. He has the task of drawing together all the thronês of the legislature, the executive and the public services.
