MAINTENANCE OF GOVERNMENT HOUSES IN CERTAIN DEPENDENT TERRITON ES

1. Please refer to my minute of 13 June.

I attach a copy of a telegram from the Governor of St Helena, received since my minute was written. Paragraph 1(B) and (C) relating to the residences of the Administrators of Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha should be disregarded as our proposal relates only to Government Houses occupied by Governors,

3. The Governor has not indicated that any special expenditure is required to bring the property up to a reasonable standard, al though he mentions that £5,000 has recently been spent on furnishings. Schedule 1 of my minute of 13 June therefore remains unchanged. Schedule 2 should be amended so that the section for St Helena reads:

4. As the Governor points out, the house which he occupies is of special historic importance. His comments about upkeep are well taken but not, I think, relevant to the present exercise.

5. I hope you will be able to let me know soon whether or not our proposal is acceptable in principle.
