HONG KONG: LETTERS FROM MR JAMES JOHNSON MP AND MR FRANK HOOLEY MP

1. Mr James Johnson MP (Labour Kingston-upon-Hull West) 15
wrote to Lord Goronwy-Roberts on 23 September, following up
Flag Bhis earlier letter of 7 September about a request for
his
assistance which he had received from Mrs Mathilda Cheung,
Chairman of the Hong Kong Government Shorthand-Audio Typists
Association. Lord Goronwy-Roberts replied to Mr Johnson's
first letter on 15 September. Mrs Cheung has also written
to Mr Frank Hooley MP (Labour Heeley), who wrote to the
Secretary of State on 23 September. Mr Evan Luard MP has
also received two letters from Mrs Cheung, dated 30 July and
15 September, and she has also written to Mr Stewart, Head
of this department: all three of these letters were in
virtually identical terms to the letters to Mr Johnson and
Mr Hooley.

2. The Hong Kong Government sent detailed comments on the
ase in a letter of 1 September. From this, and from
Jase
Mrs Cheung's letters it emerges that the shorthand and audio
typists do have a genuine case for dissatisfaction, since their
status and pay relative to female workers in other grades of
the Hong Kong government service have fallen appreciably
over the past 6 years. On the other hand, this has come about
largely as a result of steps taken by the Hong Kong
