It seems that cannabis is extensively used in the lowest socio- The increase in the number cf prosecutions for drug offences (3 049 in 1973, 3 444 in 1974) for use (690 cannabis smokers) or possession (2 583 cases), may indicate that abuse is spreading. The amount of cocaine seized has sharply increased. Some abuse of opiates, mainly pethidine, codeine and morphine has been observed.

According to the report of the International Narcotics Control Board, it appears that drug abuse is spreading. Amphetamines and barbiturates are accepted in sectors of the upper and middle classes. A certain amount of persons were treated in hospital and rehabilitation centres for abuse of drugs, particularly volatile solvents. Over 3 400 persons were arrested for drug offences, and large amounts of all types of drugs were seized in 1975.

A study based on cannabis users detected by the National Narcotics Bureau shows that 52 per cent are secondary school students, 12 per cent primary school children and 36 per cent middle class workers.

44. PERU

There are some 270 000 habitual coca chewers who live mostly in the rural areas. It is expected that as the new law on education is implemented this number of coca chewers will diminish. There has been an increase in the abuse of cannabis which is often smoked with cocaine paste mainly by young people, particulely in Lima. There is so cocaine abuse and abuse of psychotropic substances. Frustrations, curiosity as well as lack of parental guidance and lack of communication between children and their parents are the main causes of drug abuse.

Although the number of persons abusing drugs has not been estimated, it seems that cannabis is abused among those in the 17-25 age group. Cannabis can be bought easily and its abuse is spreading. Amphetamines are abused by students. Me thaqualone is used for "kicks". illicitly for self-medication and for "kicks".
