You wrote to my predecessor, Robin Janvrin, as long ago as 24 March last year (your reference SEC1/08/03) requesting information about the Community Service After Care Scheme. Mrs Birch gave you one interim reply on 6 April 1976 and I another on 24 February this year.

As I said in February, I have been prodding the Home Office since my arrival in this department in the hope of extracting something from them that would be of use to you. The latest I have heard on Community Service Orders is that the Home Office hope to publish further statistical information on the scheme in July. Meanwhile, they have passed to me a copy of their Probation and After Care Department's report for the period April 1975 to March 1976 entitled "Summary of Progress Returns from Probation and After-Care Areas". I hope this is some good to you.

3. I shall pursue the Home Office again in July.
