1. Mr Kidd has telephoned to say that Mr Ken Weetch (Labour Ipswich), who will be visiting Hong Kong in October at the invitation of the Hong Kong Government, has told him that Mr Keith Stainton MP (Conservative - Sudbury & Woodbridge) has asked him to keep an eye on the Clements case when he is in Hong Kong. Mr Weetch is the MP for the constituency adjoining Mr Stainton's constituency and although he does not belong to the same party, Mr Stainton is evidently seeking to engage Mr Weetch's interest in the Clements case.
2. Mr Kidd said he had the impression that Mr Weetch was reluctant to undertake this mission on Mr Stainton's behalf and would be glad to find some way of getting out of it.
Mr Kidd, who is aware generally of the Clements case but who did not know of the correspondence about it between Lord Goronwy- Roberts and Mr Stainton, supposed that Mr Clements would probably have come up for trial before October, in which event Mr Weetch might be let off the hook. This remains to be seen but Mr Kidd suggested that it would be useful to let Mr Weetch know nearer the time of his visit to Hong Kong where matters stand as regards Mr Clements' trial. Mr Kidd himself could pass on any information to Mr Weetch. With this in view, I should be grateful if you could write to (?) Mr Hobley and ask him to let us know of any significant developments in the Clements case between now and October. Please copy the letter to Mr Kidd.
