There was also evidence that Cunningham came from Bakewell, and
he was there on home leave in 1974. There was evidence that Cunningham was
connected with the area in which the banks Barclays Bank Limited, Old Trafford,
Manchester and the National Westminister, Derbyshire, as well as Barclays Bank
Limited of Leeds, in that he came from an area of Manchester and served as
Manchester Policeman. Also that he had indicated in Government records his
connection with Manchester, as well as going on leave and giving his leave
address as Bakewell.
There was also evidence that he drew from his Hong Kong Bank account
two cheques on a particular date and that these two cheques found their way to
the exchange department of the Hang Seng Bank. On the same day, money was drawn
by Cheng from a corrupt account. Also on that same day, a bank draft was
sent to one of Cunningham's accounts, totalling the sum of money drawn by
Cunningham and Cheng.
As to Thompson, the corrupt monies purchased drafts sent to an
account numbered 30876550 at the Jury Street Branch of Barclays Bank, Winchester,
and also to a deposit account number AG 074923 at the same bank.
A Senior Treasury Accountant from the Government was called to give
evidence that Thompson had requested a monthly allotment from money in Hong Kong to his account in the U.K., which bore the same number and bank name namely account 30876550, Jury Street Branch, Barclays Bank.
There was also a letter produced from Thompson to his bank which
contained a request by Thompson for a transfer of monies to his deposit account,
AG 074923 at the Jury Street Branch of Barclays Bank.
Thompson also gave Winchester as his home address.
Evidence was called that during the relevant period Cunningham
There was
was Divisional Superintendent and Thompson was Assistant Divisional Superintendent
and as such these two were the Senior Officers in the Division.
general evidence that Cunningham (mainly) and Thompson (to some extent) were
in charge of arranging major raids on vice establishments.
