twice, succeeding only at his third attempt in 1973

in obtaining a place at the Chinese University.

As a university student he maintained his heavy

involvement in student activities being among other

things Chairman of the Philosophy Society and Editor

of the Chinese University newspaper, and was regarded

by his fellows as a born leader to whom many turned

for help and advice. The high regard in which he was

held was indicated by the attendance of over 400

friends, teachers and colleagues at his funeral.

At university he read Philosophy as a major

subject with a Psychology minor, securing a Third

Class Honours Degree in the June 1977 degree examination.

He was regarded by his Departmental Head, Dr. Chen Tse,

as a student who was weak in the theoretical aspects of

the discipline but strong in the practical application

of his studies and in his approach to practical problems,

(iii) Employment

Immediately prior to taking his degree and leaving

University Liu Ping-hon investigated employment

opportunities, notably with Government. In or around

May 1977 he had applied for a job in the I.C.A.C. and

had hoped to be accepted into the Community Relations

Department. The I.C.A.C., after two interviews,

decided that they would offer him a position in the

Operations Branch but not in Community Relations.

In the event, however, Liu Ping-hon was offered, and

accepted, a post as Executive Officer, Grade II, with

the Government, and after a brief period of training,

began work on June 27, 1977 as Divisional Executive

Officer in Yaumati Police Station, his terms of

reference being to assist the Divisional Superintendent

with the administration of the Yaumati Division. At

the time of his death, therefore, Liu Ping-hon had been

working in this position for one month only.
