SUGAR FUTURES MARKET MAY OPEN IN SEPTEMBER

by September. The exchange is at present limited to cotton trading only.

A committee of exchange officials and sugar traders is now working on the sugar contract which is scheduled to be finalised at the end of this month.

The President of the Exchange, Mr Peter Scales, said: "We anticipate that it will take another four or five months for us to settle the terms of our contract and regulat- ions in respect of our second market in raw sugar, so that it in turn will find acceptance among the international futures trading community.”

Mr Scales added that a great deal of enthusiastic interest has been shown by the professionals in raw sugar futures business.

"We are getting good co-operation from them in our documentation of this extra commodity."

SITE FORMATION FOR MAJOR HOSPITAL BEGINS

SITE formation work began on Wednesday for a major regional teaching hospital and polyclinic at Sha Tin in the New Territories.

The 1,200-bed hospital, expected to come into operation in 1982, will serve the people of Sha Tin New Town and eastern New Territories. It will also provide clinical teaching facilities for students of the proposed medical school at the Chinese University of Hong Kong in Sha Tin. The medical school will be established in 1981.

The site formation will involve reclaiming some 24.5 hectares on the eastern side of Tide Cove and should be completed in mid-1979.

HONG KONG ELECTRONICS EXPORT SOARS

HONG Kong's second largest manufacturing industry, electronics, achieved HK$989.6 million (123.7 million pounds sterling) in exports in the first quarter of this year - a 21 percent rise over the same period last year.

To further promote sales in this field, 11 local electronic firms will take part in the Chicago Consumer Electronics Show beginning tomorrow (Sunday).

Hong Kong's participation in the Chicago fair will be the fourth organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council.

A wide variety of Hong Kong-manufactured goods ranging from television games, citizen band receivers to audio equipment will be shown at the exhibition which normally attracts 20,000 buyers from North America.

There are currently 700 electronic factories in Hong Kong, employing more than 70,000 workers.

Last year, Hong Kong's global electronic exports amounted to HK$4,021 million (502.6 million pounds sterling), representing an increase of 45.8 percent over 1975. PHOTOGENIC MODEL CROWNED MISS HONG KONG 1977

18-YEAR-OLD amateur model, Miss Loletta Chu, was crowned Miss Hong Kong 1977 over the weekend when a panel of five judges awarded her the title from among 13 other beauties at the Lee Theatre.

Miss Chu was also voted "Miss Photogenic" in the beauty contest which was sponsored by a local television station.

NEW PATHOLOGY BUILDING FOR HOSPITAL

THE Government has agreed to provide more than HK$13 million (1.63 million pounds sterling) to enable the Government-assisted Kwong Wah Hospital in Kowloon to construct a clinical pathology building.

A full range of pathology services and facilities for training laboratory technicians for the hospital will be provided in the 10-storey building. Construction work will begin later this year and is expected to be completed in early 1979.

The construction of the building is in keeping with the implementation of the Government's medical and health regionalisation plan which seeks to secure a more even use of beds available in Government and Government-assisted hospitals.

FERRY FARE INCREASE APPROVED

ADULT fares of most of the Hong Kong and Yaumatei Ferry Cornpany's cross- harbour passenger services will go up from 30 cents (3.75 pence) to 40 cents (5 pence) from July 1.

The increase was approved by the Legislative Council on Wednesday after consider- ing the company's financial position.

Some 118.8 million passengers patronised the company's cross-harbour service last year, a decrease of 2.5 million on 1975.

At present, the company provides 13 cross-harbour services, three vehicular, one coastal and 22 outlying district services. It operates a fleet of 89 vessels.
