Background
A
The West Kowloon Corridor will, on completion, provide a fast, high capacity traffic route linking the Cross Harbour Tunnel and Hung Hom with Lai Chi Kok and the western New Territories through Yau Ma Tei, Tai Kok Tsui and Cheung Sha Wan. The project is to be implemented in four stages. Stage I, a section of elevated road from Gascoigne Road to Tong Mi Road, is now under construction and scheduled for completion by September 1977. Stage II, as illustrated on the plan at Annex A, will comprise another section of elevated road and from the Sham Shui Po reclamation near Yen Chow Street, along the existing waterfront off Tung Chau Street to Tai Kok Tsui Road, where it will divide into two separate carriageways. The northbound carriageway will run along Tai Kok Tsui Road from the Cherry Street junction, while the southbound carriageway will run along Tung Chau Street to the Prince Edward Road junction. The total length of elevated road constructed under Stage II will be about 1,500 metres, providing six traffic lanes, three in each direction, Parts of Tai Kok Tsui Road and Tung Chau Street will also be re- constructed on new alignments under Stage II. The project is in Category A of the Public Works Programme at an estimated cost of $79 million and construction is scheduled to start in October 1977. When completed, it will enable through traffic to bypass the seriously congested Tai Kok Tsui area, The elevated road will be further extended under Stages III and IV, to connect with Lai Chi Kok Road to the north and Stage I now under construction in the south, to form the completed West Kowloon Corridor,
