16 MAR 1977

HKK 365/1

Part of the Sha Tin New Town Stage I Development includes the construction of a second carriageway along Lion Rock Tunnel Road from the toll plaza to Siu Lek Yuen Road, the construction of the Lion Rock Tunnel Road/primary distributor road P3 interchange, the reconstruction of the existing carriageway in Lion Rock Tunnel Road and the modification of the layout of the Siu Lek Yuen Road/Lion Rock Tunnel Road junction. The project is in Category A of the Public Works Programme. The engineering work started on Crown land on 15th December 1976 and will take 20 months to complete.

2

It is now necessary to start work on the grade separated inter- change on Lion Rock Tunnel Road to link up with the future primary distributor road P3 in order to:

(a) improve access to new development areas along Lion

Rock Tunnel Road in the vicinity of the interchange;

(b) avoid severe disruption to traffic along Lion Rock

Tunnel Road;

(c) provide access to existing Kak Tin Village and to

works areas for Stage II development;

(d) cope with the planned opening of the Sha Tin Race

Course in 1978.

3

The existing carriageway of the Lion Rock Tunnel Road be- tween the toll plaza and Siu Lek Yuen Road has started to deteriorate and remedial works are required. It is proposed to include the reconstruction of the existing carriageway within the present project, so that the work can be completed before traffic volume begins to increase substantially on further development of Sha Tin and before the forthcoming opening of the new race course.
