STNT, located at the base of the Shatin Valley some 10 kms North of Kowloon in the New Territories and linked to Kowloon by the Kowloon-Canton Railway and two main roads, is one of the three new towns being developed in the New Territories by the Government to relieve overcrowding in existing urban

areas.

According to the STNT Development Program, the STNT will provide 11 public housing estates for 300,000 people with basic physical services (i. e. water supply, drainage, sewage, roads and electricity) and community facilities (i.e. schools, health clinics, markets, fire stations, etc). Shatin New Town, when completed, will be a self-contained balanced community of approximately 520,000 people including those to be accommodated by private housing estates.

New employment opportunities are also to be generated by industrial and commercial ventures to be established in areas set aside within the STNT.

The Government policy of developing new areas will not only contribute to the redistribution of population and thus reduce heavy congestion in some overcrowded areas but will also reduce considerably social tensions which often stem from such factor as overloaded transport facilities and community services, pollution in various forms and sub- standard living conditions.

Inter-Alpha Asia (Hong Kong) Limited. The Standard Chartered Bank, New York and Wells Fargo Bank NA, San Francisco have agreed to participate in the early maturities of the loan.
