John Roper rang me to say that he and

Colonel Montgomery, in their capacities as functionaries of the anti-slavery committee, had called on

on Lord Goronwy Roberts recently in respect of an article in LaMonde of 29 November saying that illegal immigrants returned from Hong Kong to China were now being harshly treated. He said he would like to call to see me and had cleared this with Lord Goronwy - Roberts.

John Roper is one of the MPs on our list for a visit to Hong Kong some time and was there in 1975 as part of the defence select committee. He had

taken much interest in Hong Kong before then but seems to be interested with everything he saw.

I have agreed an appointment with him for . Monday 19 January and should be most grateful if you could let me have a note of his cal1 on Lord Goronwy-

Roberts.

Roper himself has promised to send

of the LaMonde article.
