1 body, believed to be that of an illegal immigrant drowned whilst attempting entry, was recovered from the sea in the eastern sector during the month.

The cumulative total of illegal immigrants arrested by or surrendered to the Police and the Army since 1st January.. 1968 is now 30,896. The yearly totals are as follows:-

The figure of illegal immigrants interviewed and accepted as having evaded controls since 30th November 1974 is 13,578. The ratio of interceptions against evasions decreased again and is now 1:4.06.

Macao

31 illegal immigrants were referred to this department by the Marine Police and consequently 4 were repatriated to Macao during the month and the remaining 27 cases are still being processed.

On 30th August, a fishing junk which ignored a signal to stop was pursued by Marine Police launches in the western waters of Hong Kong. At one, stage, the junk rammed one of the Police launches, causing slight damage. After a chase of about one hour, the junk deliberately ran aground on a beach at Siu Lam Shui, near Castle Peak. Three men were seen to jump overboard and run into the hills. A search on board unearthed. 14 illegal immigrants, one of whom was later identified as a snake-head who had conspired with the three at large to organise the illegal trip. An application for forfeiture of the junk was made and the immigrants were detained for further enquiries.
