During February 1977, 140 illegal immigrants (138 from China and 2 from Macao) surrendered to or were arrested by the Police, compared with 104 last month (83 from China and 21 from Macao). Ex

Of the 138 illegal immigrants from China arrested, 85 were. land crossers, 34 bay crossers and 19 sea crossers. Most of them were between 16 - 25 years of age. All were processed at Ta Ku Ling. The highest number of illegal immigrants arrested on any one day during the month was 15 on 7th February”.
On 12th February, the Police intercepted 4 illegal immigrants at Perimeter 31. (Ma Liu Shui). Enquiries revealed that they were farmers of the Nim Shan Commune who arranged their escape: by stealing one of the Commune's junks. One youth was released after his claim to "Chinese Fesident" status was substantiated; the other 3 were repatriated to China on 17th February.

On 16th February, 2 young farmers of Ping Shan Commune boarded a rubber raft at Hsiao Mei Sha, China and rowed towards Hong Kong. Their raft capsized in Mirs Bay and they were later picked up by a Police launch off Kat 0 Island. One of them was sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for medical treatment; Both were repatriated to China on 24th February.

7 bodies, believed to be those of illegal immigrants drowned whilst attempting entry, were recovered from the sea during the month (1 in the eastern sector, 3 in the western sector and 3 in the northern sector).
