We can see that the most important difference between the two kinds of British Citizenship is the right of entry to the United Kingdom. These two kinds of persons will hold two different kinds of passports. The Green Faper, however, suggests that the British Government should give holders of both kinds of

passports the same diplomatic protection.

Let us summarise the two kinds of arrangements proposed

by the Green Paper:

(1) BRITISH CITIZENSHIF.

The following kinds of persons can acquire British Citizenship during the Transitional Period:

(a) "United Kingdom and Colonies Citizens" who have

acquired the citizenship because they were bom, naturalised or registered by the British Government in the United Kingdom.

(b) United kingdom and Colonies Citizens" whose

parents or grandparents were born in the United Kingdom or who have been naturalised or

registered as British subjects.

(c) United Kingdom and Colonics Citizens" who arc

from overseas and have taken residence in the

United Kingdom, such as former British subjects

from East Africa.

(d) "United Kingdom and Colonies Citizens" from

overseas who have stayed in the United Kingdom beyond a prescribed period and have been given permission to continue to stay unconditionally (which means, among other things, that they will not be required to produce a certificate of employment).
