We did have the opportunity prior to our visit to the People's Republic of having a session with the Director of Education and some of his staff. They made very clear the problems that were involved in expanding the education service to meet the vast increase in population since the end of the Second World War, and they also spoke of their efforts to have a less formal system of education. The Director promised that he would send us information about the educational situation after our return to England, but it is rather too early for us to have received it.

I do hope that you will ensure that sympathetic consideration is given to the points raised by the Education Action Group.

Yours sincerely.

Janet

Secretary of State,
