Adamienity Cosipass Observatory

48. Mis Joan Lestor asked the Secre tary of State for Defence what is the estimated amount by which the defence budget will be reduced by the changet planned for the Admiralty Compass Observatory in Slough.

Dr. Gilbert : Consultation with the staff and trade union sides of the Whitley Council over the changes planned for the Admiralty Compass Observatory, Slough! has not you begun. It would, therefore be premature to state what reducuous may be made to the defence budget.

Hong Kong

49. Mr. Hooley asked the'Jecretary of State for Defence if he will now require the Hong Kong Government to meet the full cost of the British Armed Forces stationed in Hong Kong.

Mr. Mulley: I am satisɓod that the new defence costs agreement, which came into force earlier this year and represents a substantial increase in the contribution made by the Hong Kong Government, remains in the best interests of both Governments. Its main provisions were announced to the House on 19th Decem- ber 1975. Vol. 902. c. 814.]

Mr. Onslow asked the Secretary of State for Defence if, in the light of the Department of Foreign and "Common- wealth Affairs Circular “Ơ* 222/75 of 18th December 1975, outlining arrange- ments to help members of the Diplomatic Service with additional costs arising as a result of the bringing into operation of the Rent Act 1974. and of the fact that the same provisions apply to home civil servants, he has considered providing the Same @ssistance to members of Her Majesty's Forces, and if he will make a

Dr. Gülbent: Fxplosives are moved within the United Kingdom both by road and rail under statutory safety procedures. It would not be in the public interes to release details of the quantity and type of explosivos transported.

Animals (Experiments)

Mr. Hugh Jenkins asked the Secretary of State for Defence what percentage of the 190,000 animals used at the Ported Establishments in 1975 were used at the chemical defence establishment and wha' percentage at the microbiological research establishment.

Dr. Gilbert: Of the 110.3 animals tamod at the Porton Establishments id 1975, 20 per cent.
