station building will be generally accepted. Publicity should emphasise that the new Cultural Complex will be a better and more recognisable landmark, complimented by the clock-tower if considered appropriate, and that it will be more in character with the forward-looking, pro- gressive and modern outlook of present day Hong Kong.

Honourable Members will be asked to advise whether:

the overall public interest would be best served by not preserving the former Kowloon-Canton Railway station building;

the demolition of the railway station building should proceed as soon as possible;

the clock-tower should be retained for the time being and its future decided at a later date, when the Cultural Complex has been completed, and people can see for themselves whether or not the clock-tower blends with the Cultural Complex;

any independent enquiry on, or comprehensive re- examination of, the draft plan for the Tsim Sha Tsui area and, in particular, the proposed location of a public transport terminus on the site of the Marine Police Station is not required; and

the petition at Annex B from the Hong Kong Heritage Society should therefore be rejected.

(The Secretary for the Environment (Mr D. J. C. JONES), the Director of Public Works (Mr D. W. McDONALD) and the Director of Urban Services (Mr B.D. WILSON) will attend before the Council for the discussion of this item).
