PURPOSE

To enact new legislation to control pollution and to provide the resources needed to put the new laws into effect.

PROGRESS MADE & PRESUNT POSITION

PCOM

(a) Within the last three months, the

consultants have presented detailed proposals for the control of air and water pollution. These are being considered by the Government and before the consultants move into the final phase of their study, which involves the preparation of drafting instructions for new legislation to control pollution.

(b) The consultants recommended establishing

an Environmental Protection Unit to provide the Secretary for the Environ- ment with professional advice on

pollution and to co-ordinate Government's pollution control efforts. Finance Committee agreed provision of posts

in September and an Environmental Protection Adviser is being recruited to head the Unit.

NEXT QUARTER TARGETS

(a) Receive the

consultants

proposals on nois pollution and soli waste disposal by

31.12.76.

(b) Discuss the reports

on noise, air and water within the Government and wi EPCON by 15.2.77.

(c) Interview oversea

candidates for the post of Environ- mental Protection Adviser by 31.1.7
