Furpose

To enact new legislation to control pollution and to provide the resources needed to put the new laws into effect.

Next Quarter Targets

(a) The final report by Environ- mental Resources Ltd., which is largely concerned with draft legislation, enforcement measures, and organisation for a wide range of environmental protection measures, was submitted in July and was, together with an appreciation

prepared by Environment Branch, discussed by the Advisory Committee on Environmental Pollution (EPCOM) at the end of September. Following this, it is intended that there shall be further consultation with :

(i)

Government departments to establish an agreed internal position;

(ii) industry and other sectors

of the community that are likely to be affected by the proposed legislation; and

(iii) a start be made a detailed

drafting of the legisla- tion.

(a)(i) Complete by

end November;

(ii) Complete mid-

January;

(iii) commence mid-

January.
