The First Biennial General Scientific Meeting of the Association of Surgeons of South East Asia was held at the Excelsior Hotel in Hong Kong from 18-21 September 1977. It was not possible to attend personally due to the timing but it is

understood that about 100 delegates - out of a membership of 373 from 9 countries

attended the Congress. The majority of those attending came from Taiwan and the Philippines. Unfortunately one gathers that few of these percolated through to the associated trade exhibition and that the format of the latter left much to be

Originally the trade emphasis had been on pharmaceuticals but at the last minute several local agents representing 'hardware' interests became aware of the event and participated.

3.2. There seemed to be a dearth of information/publicity even amongst the Hong Kong surgeons, and any request in the future for United Kingdom industry to participate, other than through their local agents, would be unlikely to receive much encouragement unless the exhibition took a definitely more professional shape. The next event will be in 1979 in Manila: the President on this occasion will be Mr Antonio C Oposa, Head of the Manila Doctor's Hospital.

3.3.

It is worth noting that there is said to be a considerable demand at the moment for:

defibrillators

walking aids

elbow crutches

wheel chairs hip implants

Reference should also be made to the list of equipment quoted in the March 1977 report.
