HONG KONG: PQS FROM MR DAN JONES MP

1. Mr Dan Jones MP (Labour Burnley) has put down three Written Questions for 7 April concerning the provision of medical and

health services in Hong Kong.

2. Mr Jones, the Vice-Chairman of the Anglo/Hong Kong Parliamentary Group, was one of the principal co-sponsors of Sir Paul Bryan's

FLAG A Early Day Motion "Social Progress in Hong Kong". He is a comparatively

regular, and friendly, questioner on Hong Kong affairs, mainly in FLAGS B, C, Dthe social field. He put down six Questions in 1976 on education

and labour matters.

3.

The last Question on health matters was that tabled by FLAG E Mr Ron Lewis MP (Labour Carlisle) on 28 February and answered by

Mr Luard. Mr Jones' Questions are more general and are evidently designed to bring out Hong Kong's achievements and plans in the field of health. Mr Jones' interest in this subject may have been aroused by the medical and health regionalisation plan announced last week by the Hong Kong Government. This plan is designed to improve facilities and standards of medical care and to relieve overcrowding at the major hospitals. In general, we have taken the view that the Hong Kong Government's performance with regard to medical and health services is satisfactory.

4.

G I submit draft replies based on information provided by the

FLAG Hong Kong Government (Hong Kong telegram no. 359 of 6 April refers).
