Although this might create a precedent leading to hope that all picked up by British ships might expect to come here, it was still hoped that the Home Office uld be flexible, if Brunei still refused.
Miss Pearce offered resettlement for this group at Ockenden provided the Government would underwrite.
The question of publicity was discussed. The Standing Conference had agreed to ask the BBC to prepare a general programme on refugees; this could be a major item on the agenda for the next meeting on 29 September. There was also need for special publicity on the situation of the boat people, as there was little public awareness of the tragic position; but it would be better to arrange this when the refugees were in accommodation.
It was agreed:-
a) that Mr. Morgan should transmit Ockenden's offer to take the group of Vietnamese refused by Brunei
b) to consider special publicity in the media
c) to ask John Craven to show the film on the boat people at a special meeting of the Committee.
