Maideen told him that the Vietnamese had no right to prevent Jue British Vice Consul from boarding a British aircraft which was involved in a humanitarian operation of benefit to the Vietnamese Government as well as to the other parties concerned. Nor should the status of a British diplomat be compared to that of the French, who were in Ho Chi Minh City on a strictly unofficial basis. He was I thought, coming on a bit strong but what he said evidently did the trick; the Chief of Security said that he was sorry for the confusion and that he would ensure that the facility was extended to any further visitors from the British Embassy in Hanoi.
