UK and sponsors here), since to do so would surely be at
the expense of genuine Vietnamese "boat people".
Another aspect of this general problem which I am sure
you will understand, is our own responsibility for long
Kong which gave temporary asylum to over 200 "boat people"
during lay and June alone: This is quite apart from the
1,500 Vietnamese which Hong Kong has had to absorb
during the first half of this year. In view of this I
think we owe it to Hong Kong to give priority when we
can to applications received from "boat people" landed
there. In addition, Brit sh shipping is continuing to
pick up refugees at sea in the area; this sometimes
raises separate issues with which we must concern
ourselves.
I am sending a copy of this letter and of yours to
Shirley Summerskill.
