General Observations

1. The Constitution of Tonga dated 1875, which is still in force, contains a declaration on human rights.

(i) There is no imprisonment without trial.

(ii) Torture is not used.

(iii) There is no slavery.

(v) The judiciary is completely independent.

(vi) There are no trade unions in Tonga. However,

this is because of the nature of the

society rather than because of restrictions. There is of course no reference to trade unions in the 1875 Constitution.
