The judiciary preserve their traditional independence and integrity. There has been criticism in judicial circles of the political activities of Thanin Kraivichien, himself a Supreme Court judge, prior to his being appointed Prime Minister.

(vi) Trade unions remain legal but their powers

are unclear. In one of its first acts after taking power, the NARC affirmed its support for the existing labour laws. However, a Ministry of the Interior Notice issued on 8 October prohibited strikes. Although a handful of labour leaders have been detained, the military government have acted with caution in dealing with the still potentially powerful labour movements.

(vii) One section of NARC Order No 25 (expanding

the anti-communist laws) empowers the Prime Minister to prevent Thai nationals living in or carrying out business in any foreign country he may designate. This legal power has not yet been used.
