(i) Little is known of the fate of

political prisoners but there are indications that periods of pre-
trial detention can be extended without any recourse to the courts.
There is no evidence available as to the use of systematic torture but penal conditions are known to be harsh.
(iii) Slavery as an institution does not exist
in Mongolia.
(iv) All media are controlled by the ruling Mongolian People's Revolutionary (Communist)Party. This in turn closely follows the line dictated by the Communist
Party of the Soviet Union.

(v) The judiciary are firmly under the control
of the Party; each higher court has the authority to overthrow decisions of courts below it thus ensuring that all decisions follow the Party line.

(vi) Labour Unions play much the same part as they
do in the Soviet Union. The principle of collective bargaining is alien to the Mongolian Trade Union Movement which is totally subordinate to the Party.
(vii) Mongolian citizens do not have the right
to emigrate. Only officials, and party delegates travel outside the country.
