TRADES UNION CONGRESS 1977

TRADE UNION INVOLVEMENT IN EEC
Congress is extremely concerned at the growing influence of the European Economic Community on the day-to-day affairs of the British trade union Movement. The increase in directives and regulations from the Council of Ministers and the EC Commission demands an improved TUC role in the EEC to ensure that adequate consultation is established so that affiliated unions can be involved in the drafting and approval of such directives and regulations.
Congress therefore requests the General Council to improve machinery within Congress House for monitoring and informing affiliates of proposals and developments which could affect British workers, and to initiate immediate talks with the EC Commission, the ETUC and any other relevant bodies in order to:
(i) provide for early drafts or proposed directives and regulations to be
made available to the TUC;
(ii) ensure that representatives of interested affiliates are included in any technical or special committees set up by the EC Commission, especially those concerned with working methods, professional qualifications, etc in specific sectors; and
(iii) extend the existing system of European joint industry committees, and in particular to establish such committees for sectors of the public.
