Many thanks for your letter of 4 July. I am sorry I have been so long in replying but I have been waiting to hear from our Finance Department that they have authorized the payment of your claim for expenses in Britain. They have now written to the Consul-General in Sydney authorizing payment and I enclose a copy of their letter for your information.

2. Thank you very much for sending us copies of the two notes of Professor Yerbury. I have passed these on to Harry who, I understand, has thanked you personally by letter.

3. Your tax office in Britain have not come back to us for authentication of your status. I hope this means you have been successful, or that your accountant has. If not, perhaps you would like to drop me a line giving the name and address of your accountant here and I will get in touch with him and see what we can do. It is, of course, absurd that they should categorize you as a Crown Servant.

4. Of course, all this arguing about money is tiresome and should be unnecessary. My experience is that on the whole action at the beginning saves a lot of argument at the end, which is why I have suggested you put me in touch with your accountant so that I can do as much of the necessary certifying here without troubling you.

5. I hope to be in Hong Kong in October. If there is any possibility that you will be there at the same time I shall look forward to seeing you.
