Dear John,
1.
2.
I hope that Leeds was fun and that you managed to keep warm.
This letter is not designed to bring you up to date on all that has happened in your absence. (I have done you a "diary" for each of the two weeks and Laurraine has collected a massive folder of papers for you.) There is, however, one matter in which you will find yourself involved almost as soon as you return and about which you ought to know.
3. Professor Turner has produced a report (an interim and provisional review) on his study of Labour Relations and is coming into the Office to discuss it at 11.00 a.m. on Tuesday. We plumped for Tuesday as opposed to Monday, the only other day that Turner could offer, in order to give you a little more time to get straight. Even so, you will want to know what is in Turner's report before you see him and you won't have much time on Monday (you have the farewell lunch for Peter Male and Harry Stanley's/Hugh Cortazzi's meeting in the afternoon).
I am, therefore, sending you a copy of Turner's report so that, if you
I feel strong enough, you can glance at it over the weekend. have read the main body of the report, but not, so far, the appendices. I do not think there is any point in my offering any observations on it at present. In any case, both Harry Hurst and Tom are going over it with a view to formulating some questions etc which we might put to Turner. We are looking forward seeing you again.
