The overwhelming majority of such disputes were thus settled with the

assistance of the Labour Department, with a proportion being resolved by

other official agencies.

* In his last Report, the Labour Commissioner changed the dating from

financial to calendar years.

70. As regards grievance settlement the role of the Labour Department

is equally positive. The recent record shows a significant increase in

the number of disagreements of this type (which, again, mostly concern

matters of "right" arising out of dismissals, such as arrears of wages,

payment in lieu of notice, severance pay, and so on) that have come to

the Department's attention. As follows*:

It is fairly clear from this, as from the previous table, that the

activity of the Labour Department in this area is increasing more

sharply than (for instance) the membership of unions, and that workers

are increasingly willing to take action through it.
