Mr Hayward (FED)
CHINESE COAL FOR THE HONG KONG POWER STATION
1.
I was glad to learn, from the record of conversation between the Secretary of State for Industry and the Chinese Minister for Foreign Trade, that Mr Li Chiang felt that there was scope for further discussions on the supply of coal.
2. There seemed to be two points which now need to be followed up:-
(a) Derek March in Hong Kong should be informed of this promising sign and should, in turn, be asked to inform other interested parties;
(b) the FCO should ensure that the lead department in Whitehall, presumably Industry, follow up with the Chinese and China Light and Power.
3. I should be grateful for your agreement to (a) and for your views on how we can best achieve (b).
