THE PRIME MINISTER
10 DOWNING STREET
Dear Sir Lawrence,
29 September 1977
As you know from our meetings earlier this year,
I have been following closely the efforts of the
Department of Industry to develop proposals for the new
power station OI Lantao inland. The proposals which are
now being put forward by the Department of Industry have
been seen and approved by me. I hope that they meet
with your approval, and that they will form the basis for
successful discussions in Hong Kong with the UK team led
by the Department of Industry.
As I told you when we met on 26 July, we are keeping
in touch, through Her Majesty's Ambassador in Peking, with
the Chinese authorities about the possibility of the export
of Chinese coal in exchange for the supply of UK mining
equipment or other UK goods. There are increasing signs that
the Chinese are looking for greater trade with the West and
I hope that we will be able to take advantage of this.
With all good wishes.
Yours sincerely,
(sgd) J. C.
