HONG KONG POWER STATION PROJECT: "CHINESE DIMENSION"

2. The latest information from HM Embassy Peking is, in fact, 63) that contained in the first paragraph on page 2 of the record of
the Prime Minister's meeting with Sir Lawrence Kadoorie on 26 July, which reports the outcome of Sir E Youde's approach to the Chinese Vice Minister of the coal industry on 20 July (reported in full in Peking telegram no. CREDA 64 to DTI).

3. As the Prime Minister said to Sir Lawrence Kadoorie, it looks as though the Chinese are doing some serious thinking about the possibility of meeting the expected requirements for the new power station in Hong Kong. Nevertheless, as Peking had reported earlier in their telegram no. 24 of 11 May to Hong Kong, it still seems doubtful whether the Chinese will have made up their minds before the China Light & Power Company (CLP) have to place contracts for the new power station. The Department of Industry continue, with our agreement, to include a mention of the "Chinese dimension" in their outline package offer to the CLP but they are not optimistic that this will amount to anything at the end of the day.
4.
A copy of the record has gone to Mr Fenn in Peking.
