I agree that the situation. now facing us in the

negotiations is extremely serious. I can also well

understand your reaction to some of the tactics used

by the Community negotiator. I too hold no brief for them.

But we have to recognise that the consequences of

failure for all of us are such that I must ask you to do

all that you can to ensure that the negotiations are

resumed as rapidly as possible and that they reach their

conclusion in a settlement round the table. We would not

of course mention a word XX XXXX to the Commission about the assurances I am seeking from you.
