Finally Mr. Haferkamp admitted that the community had a very
uncomfortable task ahead of it but that they intended to carry out
that task in a fair and open way. He suggested it was important to leave open the possibility of contacts outside the negotiations themselves. For his part, it would be his objective to ensure the EEC negotiators were given adequate flexibility and that the Community's approach was fair.
Finally Mr. Haferkamp said that the experts were still discussing the details of the Community's position and that the information which the Governor had given would be taken into account. He admitted that the Community had a very uncomfortable task ahead of it, but siad that the Community intended to carry out that task in a fair and open way. He thought that the Community should be able to offer some compensation to H.K., or at least a clarification of why it had to insist on certain things.
