12. Having observed developments in recent monthr regarding the future of the FFA and the possibility which has been mentioned of Hong Kong's being asked to accept much worse terms in a new bilateral agreement with the EC than before, we feel that time
has come for the industry to make known directly to the UK
Government our concern at the situation. What we are seeking
is that the UK Government should re-consider a textile policy
which in our view would not benefit the UK producers but will in its application cause damage to Hong Kong's textiles and clothing trade industry and consequently impede Hong Kong's
continued economic progress. We are aware that the Hong Kong
Government has already done much to explain in detail to the U
Government its views, on the situation. The industry would now
like to seek, first of all, clarifications by the UK Government
on its policy on the future of the MFA; and, secondly, en gesurt nee
from the UK Government that, in the formulation of the UK textile policy, Hong Kong's interests will not be overlooked and that
policies will not be pursued which are directly harmful to the
legitimate interests of Hong Kong.
