RENEGOTIATION OF THE MULTI FIBRE ARRANGEMENT: LETTER FROM

THE RT HON LIONEL MURRAY OBE

1. Mr Murray wrote to the Secretary of State on 28 March stressing the importance of a strong EEC mandate to deal with the problem of cumulative disruption. The meeting with the TUC Textile, Clothing and Footwear Industries Committee to which Mr Murray refers is to be held jointly by Mr Dell and Mr Varley on 18 May. There was a similar meeting about a year ago. Mr Murray has written in identical terms to Mr Varley and

Mr Dell.

2. Mr Varley replied on 18 April. This could be taken as the substantive reply on behalf of the Government.

3.

DoT officials have recommended that Mr Meacher, in

Mr Dell's absence in Fiji, send a short acknowledgement referring to the main reply from Mr Varley. I recommend Dr Owen do the

same.

4.

I submit a draft letter to Mr Murray.
