Visible trade balance and terms of trade

30.

The visible trade deficit which was less in 1975 than in

1974 narrowed further in 1976. The terms of trade which had been

deteriorating since 1973, started to improve in the second quarter of

1975. The terms of trade index (that is the ratio of the export unit

value index to the import unit value index) was 102 (1973 = 100) in

the third quarter of 1976. In Cctober and November 1976, it was

respectively at 101 and 100. This slight deterioration was expected

as world demand for raw materials increased and the demand for exports

levelled off from the rapid groth experienced in the second half of

1975 and the first half of 1975.
