In 1976, in strong contrast to the general decline in

1975, domestic exports of all commodity groups increased substantially.

Domestic exports of cotton clothing continued to grow. The quantity

of exports of cotton clothing for the first three quarters of 1976

was 27% higher then for the corresponding noriod a year ago and

exort prices 286 higher. The denim boom also generated large

gains in domestic exports of woven cotton fabrics, with quantities

and prices for the first three quarters of 1975 respectively at 44%

and 19 higher than in the corresponding period in 1975. The

equivalent increases for watches were 47,% and 25%.

Although exports of clothing were doing well in 1975 and

in 1976, the proportion of clothing exports to the total value of

domestic exports dropped from 46% in the first quarter of 1976 to 45%

in the seconl quarter, 433 in the third quarter and 40% in the fourth

quarter. After discountin., seasonal patterns, the indications are

that exports of clothing are moving back to the position they held

before the recession when they accounted for 38% of the total value

of domestic exports. In 1975, with domestic exports of other

commodities depressed, clothing edged up in importance to 44% of the

total value of domestic exports.
