CLOSURE OF 117 SIGNALS UNIT, HONG KONG

1. We have received the attached signal from the Commander RAF Hong Kong on the projected closure of No 117 Signals Unit at Tai Mo Shan. He has asked that the Americans be informed formally of our intention not to renew our 1973 Agreement with them, under which we operate this radar installation. The decision was taken in November 1975 that we would continue to man the installation until the end of March 1978, subject to-the-Hong Kong Government meeting the full cost incurred by the RAF and the continued availability of US spares. The Hong Kong Government has accepted this decision, as have the Americans. remains now is to carry out our final withdrawal.

2. The USAF wish to withdraw their equipment at Tai Mo Shan and end their arrangements to supply spares on the same date as we pull out. MOD therefore intends to inform them formally of our intention to withdraw our personnel at the end of March 1978 as they have requested. As far as I can gather from our files, this was not done in 1975 when the decision was taken, and CRAF Hong Kong's signal seems to bear this out.
