HONG KONG'S FUTURE

1. Thank you for your letter of 28 April about George Gale's comments on Hong Kong.

2. As far as we can see the only occasion on which Gale's conversations with the Chinese were reflected in print was his article in the Daily Express on 19 April (copy attached). After consulting Hong Kong Department we have decided that on balance it would be best not to quiz Gale since that might make him attribute greater significance to the conversations he had in Peking than they probably merit. If the Chinese really wish to get ideas about the future of Hong Kong across to us, they will no doubt choose a more reliable interlocutor.
