HEUNG YEE KUK'S DELEGATION
Speech delivered by the Chairman of the Delegation,
Mr. CHEUNG Yan-lung, M.B.E., J.P., at Cocktail Party on 26/4/77.
Ladies & Gentlemen:
First of all, on behalf of the members of this Delegation,
I wish to extend to you our sincere welcome!
Tho Hong Kong New Territories lleung Yeo Kuk has delegated us to visit the U.E. for three purposes:-

1. To inform the people in the U.K., whether in authority of outervise, of the actual situation of the Now Territories in the hope that they may help esa our problems. We also wish to take this opportunity to strengthen the ties between us and our friends in the U.K.
2. To visit our Nev Territories' clansmen resident in the U.K. and other parts of Europe. These tens of thousands of N,T. clansmen arc Co: corned with the situation back home; we too, are concorned with the condition of their living. This Delegation has brought the plenty of good news from home which may give them comfort. Le will also bring their ow good news back home to comfort their friends and relatives.
3. To strengthen the financial ties between the U.K. and Hong Kong
for the sake of mutual help and benefit. We also hope that certain groups of the British people would change their opinion of ilong Kong and not discriminate against liong Kong products.
This visit, which is intended for the expression of goodwill and
discussion, has a three-fold pupose behind it. he, the delegates, are enthusiastic and hopeful in the accor.plishment of cur mission.
The New Turritories of Hong Kong came under critish rule in 1898 when the "Lease of Low Territories" was signed by the Chinese and British Covernments. The duration of the lease is for 99 years, commencing from 1st July, 1898. The area of the New Territories is 366 sq. miles, which is 91% of the total area of Hong Kong. In 1997, part of the New Territories was included in to the urban area of Kowloon (and was called "hew Kowloon"), leaving 360 cq. miles of land (which is 89% of the total area of Hong Kong) still under the New Territories administration. It is expected that, by 1985, the populat- ion of the How Territories will row from the prosent fisure of 1,150, Qup to 2,200,000, Tuach is equivalent to th. 3 of both liong Kong Island and Kowloon jut 20. thor. In the Sino-British political relation- ship, the New Territories is an area which c
the most attention.
