EDUCATION IN HONG KONG

1.

We have just seen the Hong Kong Government Green Paper on senior secondary and tertiary education (Brief C).

2. The most significant change is that provision will be made for 50% rather than, as previously announced, 40% of 15 year

old children to have subsidized school places by 1981.

3.

There will be additional opportunities for Form 3 leavers to continue subsidized education with the increase in places in

technical institutes. By 1981 there will be places at such institutes for 14% of 15 year olds.

4. There will be subsidized Form 4 places for 63% of children by 1986. A further increase in places at technical institutes will mean that by that date 83% of children will be able to obtain subsidized education beyond the minimum leaving age.

5. At the same time emphasis is to be placed on improving the quality of education, both in terms of buildings and facilities and of the standard of teaching. To this end the basic pre- service teacher training course will be extended from two to

three years.
