GOVERNMENT HOUSE

HONG KONG

1st January 1977

Sir,

ANNUAL REVIEW FOR 1976 HONG KONG

In 1974 economic depression struck;

in 1975 the depression deepened and there was acute

anxiety, but the bottom was reached, hope revived

and by the end of the year progress was resumed;

but in 1976 Hong Kong showed its paces in a

recovery of remarkable speed, whose benefits were

widely distributed. By the end of the year in

terms of employment, disposable real incomes,

confidence, investment and Government programmes,

Hong Kong was back on the course from which it had

been knocked by the world recession. The prospect

is now for continuing though less spectacular growth.

The Government's principal aim is to take the fullest

advantage of this growth to continue the elimination

of the deficiencies which too rapid increase of

population has forced on Hong Kong. External

economic catastrophe excepted this should be

achieved by the early '80s.

THE RIGHT HONOURABLE

ANTHONY CROSLAND, MP
