HONG KONG CHINESE LANGUAGE PRESS COMMENT ON RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

After reading your submission of 23 December I checked back on the maiden speeches made by Father McGovern and Leung Tat-Shin at Legco in October. Both welcomed the proposal to introduce paid annual leave; both felt that one week's leave was too short, Father McGovern going on record as favouring about 14 working days "and in 1977 rather than 1978". Leung Tat-Shin also endorsed the proposal to forbid young workers from working overtime because many of them made use of their evenings to further their education so as to enable them to take jobs in the engineering and industrial fields.
