CAPITAL PUNISHMENT
With reference to your letter No. 380/1 dated 14th December on the above subject, the information you requested therein is as follows:
(a)
- During the period 30.8.64 - 26.5.66
(Independence date) there were three official executions:
(1)
(2)
Philip Manning on 16.2.65 and who had been sentenced on 28.5.64;
Panday Persaud on 9.3.65 and who
had been sentenced on 26.6.64; and
(3) Abdool Hamid on 10.8.65 and who had
been sentenced on 23.12.64.
They were all convicted on Murder charges. No reprieves
were granted during the period.
(b)
The death penalty is still on the statute books
of this country and since Independence there
have been two official executions:
(1) Deokennan on 7.5.68 and who had been
sentenced on 23.11.65; and
(2) Leonard Ramoutar on 3.3.70 and who had been sentenced on 24.4.69.
They also had been convicted on Murder charges.
