HANDED TO Mr Newens by the S/S in the

House of Commons,

Thank you for the letter which you sent on behalf of yourself (221) -and your twenty colleagues on 29 November, asking me to prevail upon

the Bermudian authorities to exercise clemency in the case of the two convicted murderers whose execution has been set for Friday.

As you yourself point out, this is essentially an internal affair of the Bermudian Government. I can only intervene to recommend to The Queen the exercise of the prerogative of mercy if there has been an evident miscarriage of justice. In this case all the processes of law in Bermuda have been correctly gone through and exhausted. I have, however, sent an immediate telegram to the Governor, telling him of your letter and asking him to ensure that it is brought to the urgent attention of Bermudian Ministers.

Mr Stan Newens MP.

(DAVID OWEN)
